The Opposition’s protest on the budget was termed as “desecration,” during the Parliamentary session yesterday.
Government MP A H M Azwer described the Opposition’s behaviour during Parliament on Tuesday as “unpleasant.” Opposition MPs had waved placards protesting the budget, which they opined did no favours for the people of the country.
“They brought printed placards and other alien things into the House. They polluted the air and desecrated the place,” an indignant Azwer said.
Chief Opposition Whip John Amaratunga however argued that the Opposition’s rights to freedom of speech and debate had been violated when the protest had not been reported by the media. He was supported by UNP MP Dayasiri Jayasekara, who claimed the alleged non- reporting of the issue amounted to a breach of Parliamentary privilege. Opposition MPs spoke of an “unseen hand” which had lead to the protest on Tuesday going largely unreported by media.
