Earlier today Housing Minister Wimal Weerawansa urged Sri Lankans to surround the UN office and hold its staff hostage until the advisory panel on Sri Lanka is scrapped (Daily Mirror). The government assured the UN that this was the Minister’s ‘individual opinion’. UN Associate Spokesman Farhan Haq said that the body had not mobilized against any immediate threat.
The UN office remains in a secured section of Colombo, a street which also contains the Defence Secretary’s home. No visible protests have been reported at the scene.
