Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said the Sri Lankan government and people are capable of handling their own problems. This was reported by Xinhua, the official press agency of China. China, a member of the UN Security Council, is a major donor to Sri Lanka and has long supported the Rajapaksa government. Their tacit opposition to the UN panel plus the opposition of Russia, another Security Council member, makes it unlikely that any findings would be acted on by the UN.
Qin said China believes that Sri Lanka alone is capable of handling Sri Lanka’s problems. China has traditionally protected its allies (and itself) from scrutiny in international bodies like the UN.
