BMW said Thursday it plans to add 500 new workers at its Spartanburg County plant to help with the start-up of production of the X3 sports activity vehicle.
The plant will have about 6,000 full-time and contract workers after the expansion, bringing employment in Greer closer to where it stood before the economic downturn, spokesman Bobby Hitt said.
The German automaker is finishing a $750 million plant expansion that will boost production to up to 200,000 vehicles a year starting in 2011. The plant can make about 150,000 vehicles annually now.
X3 production will switch to the Upstate from Austria later this year. BMW also is expanding its paint and body shop and building a new assembly hall as sales for all of its vehicles have picked up.
