11 thousand 500 Mahapola scholarships have been awarded to students selected for Universities this year. The ceremony related to the inauguration of the scholarships was held at the Prime Minister’s office.
24 students of the Colombo, Sri Jayawardenapura and Moratuwa Universities received scholarships, symbolizing its presentation. These were handed over by Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne. Scholarships are due to be given to all the eligible students by the middle of this year. Giving his views at this event, the Prime Minister referred to the importance of moulding a group excelled in knowledge with the proper use of facilities during their education in Universities.
The Prime Minister called on the students to engage in their task properly. They will receive an opportunity to further improve their knowledge than studying in schools. He called on them to pursue their studies reasonably and setting an example to others.
Higher Education Minister S.B. Disanayake in his address pointed out that they have taken a stern decision to rid ragging completely from Universities. He emphasized that this menace should be completely wiped out from Universities. All this is done to strengthen free education.
Minister Johnston Fernando, Parliamentarian Abdul Cader, Cooperatives and Internal Trade Secretary Anura Siriwardena and Higher Education Secretary Sunil Jayantha Navaratna were present on this occasion.
