The Royal Parade saw schoolboys, old boys, family and friends of Royal College walk through Colombo today. The annual walk is especially important this year because it commemorates the 175th anniversary of Royal College, founded in 1835.
Royal College is one of the premiere boys schools in Sri Lanka with alumni including the Sri Lankan President J.R. Jayawaradena, Maldivian President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and three Prime Ministers. It is the oldest public school in the country and was selected by Microsoft in 2009 as one of the world’s most innovative schools. Alumni of Royal College still occupy prominent positions in business and society and, being a public school, it continues to draw a diverse student body.
To celebrate their history current students, past students, clubs, societies and invitees from other schools paraded through Colombo, from Royal College to a party on the street at Green Path. Despite rain, the parade proceeded through town.
