She is Chamindri Hemachandra, Managing Director of Mallika Hemachandra Jewellers. “I am proud to be her daughter,” says Chamindri, who says her mother is an exceptional creator who has built up a business she begun as a passion – designing jewellery for friends in the early 1960s. Then, with the establishment of the business in 1968, Mallika Hemachandra has seen only success. Jewellery designing and the glitter of gold has surrounded Mallika Hemachandra since she was a child. Having designed jewellery as a child and done bead work as a teenager, it was fate that took her to a U.K.- based designing school.
For when her husband, who was an eminent physician went to the United Kingdom to get an additional qualification, Mallika Hemachandra used the time to get a recognized U.K. degree qualification in jewellery designing from the Holborn School of Arts and Crafts. As time flew, her children joined in this exceptional business which initially began as a hobby. Thus, it comes as no surprise that the family puts their hearts into the work they do. The designs are exceptional, with Mallika Hemachandra concentrating on designing for all times and with the younger Chamindri Hemachandra connecting it all with today’s generation and their newer tastes in jewellery.
Thus, July will see not only a bridal collection from Mallika Hemachandra, which can be viewed at their branches in Ja-ela, Nugegoda, Kandy and their main branch at Horton Place, but also a lighter kind of jewellery for the younger generation, made of white gold and diamonds that will dazzle the teenager. “These are genuine diamonds and as we at Mallika Hemachandra’s are fastidious about the finish and the surface, the designs are exceptional pieces of work” said Chamindri.
The bridal collection is elegant; not huge pieces of jewellery but quaint, finely designed jewellery that are striking both in their gold and diamond settings and designs. With but one or two pieces of jewellery from each design, after which the design is scrapped, the bridal jewellery collection comes out as exceptional. A special line of Bridal Jewellery is available at the main branch in Horton Place.
This mother-daughter duo has turned heads with their designs so much so that one wonders from where all the inspiration comes from. “We are inspired by everything around us; it can be anything. Recently I went on a trip to Kenya and was inspired by the colours and textures of the coats of animals there, so much so that we had a safari collection – a collection which had the colour and texture of the skins of these animals.
We took the patterns and made it in gold – earrings, rings, bangles, pendants, cuff links and bracelets,” said Chamindri Hemachandra. For Mallika and Chamindri Hemachandra, inspiration can come from anywhere, be it a tree, a bark of tree or any object from nature. It is not just jewellery for women, but a special line for the gentleman has ensured that Mallika Hemachandra has filled a gap that has been in existence for a long time.
Recognising the jewellery needs of men has resulted in an exceptional collection for the gentlemen. Mallika Hemachandra Jewellers have their branches at Liberty Plaza, Majestic City, Nugegoda, Kandy, World Trade Centre and the Bandaranaike International Airport. Sending their exquisite collections to Bahrain, Mallika Hemachandra’s newest addition is a branch in the Maldives.
“It is the purity of our gold, our warranty and our guarantee that certify our products,” said Chamindri. With a sophisticated gold testing machine from Germany in place, Mallika Hemachandra’s not just proves the purity of their own gold but offers the machine to anyone who wishes to check the purity of any gold in his or her possession.
“All our products go through this machine for purity and content before they are put out into the market” said Chamindri Hemachandra. With their affordable prices, Mallika Hemachandra remains an exceptional chain of jewellery stores which offer value for money. With yellow gold, white gold, red gold and a range of exceptional designs, Mallika Hemachandra Jewellers is also known for their custom-made designs. “It is usual for ladies to come here with blouses, handbags and sarees to make jewellery that match colours and motifs,” said Chamindri Hemachandra. With a harmonious blend that is neither Western nor ethnic, Mallika Hemachandra’s have always taken the middle path in their designs to create exceptional jewellery that appeals to every taste. firstname.lastname@example.org
