Treasury Secretary Dr. P.B. Jayasundera slipped out without waiting for question time at a budget seminar organized by the Inland Revenue Department (I.R.D.) on Wednesday.
The I.R.D. officer who was in charge of introducing the speakers at this seminar was unaware that Jayasundera had left the hotel where it was being conducted and even mentioned his name as one of the panellists to take questions from the audience, before this reporter brought to his notice that Jayasundera had already left.
“I didn’t know that he had gone,” was the man’s reply, when it was told to him that Jayasundera had left the hall. It was therefore left to the Commissioner General of Inland Revenue K.M.S. Kandegedara and his officers to answer the questions raised by the audience at this seminar, though there was separate cages in the question forms circulated, where the participants were asked to write in their queries and to tick off the relevant cage, so that the organizers would know whether the questions raised were directed to the Treasury Secretary or to the I.R.D. officer in question, with the former being absent to reply to such.
