A Swimming Pool For St. Benedict’s

Jul 3, 2010 3:01:13 PM - thesundayleader.lk

St. Benedict’s College has a remarkable record in sports gaining National, Asian and International levels of competitive excellence in Athletics, Basketball, Cricket, Hockey, Soccer, Gymnastics, Tennis, Table Tennis and Rugby. Its record especially in Soccer, Basketball and Hockey cannot be matched by any school in Sri Lanka, producing Champion Teams year after year and the saga continues to the present day.

Surprisingly while all these achievements in such a wide spectrum of sports were happening for over a hundred years, for some unknown reason, there had been no initiation in to aquatic sports. As a result thousands of Benedictines, who received a sound all-round education under the Lasallian Brothers, left school without the ability to swim. To the present generation, it then became a dream to have a swimming pool to call their own.

The Old Boys’ Union Dance Committee of 2008 headed by Old Ben Jeyam Perumal, when elected, took it upon themselves to work towards a Swimming Pool Project, using the Dance as the catalyst to give a head start to the Aquatic Centre. With the entire Benedictine Fraternity putting its weight behind the project, the dream of every Benedictine will be realised, when the Rs. 35 million Twenty Five Metre Swimming Pool with a magnificent two storey pavilion with all modern facilities including spectator viewing, will be ceremonially opened on Friday, July 9. The Programme for the day begins with concelebration of Holy Mass by Old Benedictine priests at St. Lucia’s Cathedral at 8 a.m. followed by the opening and blessing of the Aquatic Centre.

The Aquatic Centre is named after the Director of the College, Rev. Bro. Granville Perera in appreciation of the remarkable turnaround during his tenure of office, in the standard of academics, sports, extra-curricular activities and the massive infrastructure development that has taken place during this time.
