Ukrainian Prime Minster Mykola Azarov, during a meeting held with Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse on Thursday (01st July), expressed interest in extending Ukrainian knowledge on Space Technology to Sri Lanka.
In October 2003, Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva signed an agreement for space cooperation, and PM Azarov promised to extend the same to Sri Lanka in the future.
President Mahinda Rajapakse had replied that Sri Lanka’s level of knowledge in Information Technology would be greatly enhanced with the acquisition of space technology from the Ukraine .
The two leader had also discussed exchanges of scholarship programmes between the two countries and future business visits, that would further enhance bilateral relations.
Sri Lanka in November 2009 had also signed an agreement with the Surrey Sattelite Technology Limited, gaining Earth observation capability and allowing for Sri Lankan membership of the Disaster Monitoring Constellation.
President Rajapaksa pointed out that Sri Lanka has a high level of knowledge in Information Technology and with the acquisition of space technology, it would be further enhanced.
Discussions also focused on the agreements signed between the two countries the previous day. The two leaders agreed to establish a Joint Commission with representatives from both countries to implement those agreements.
In addition, President Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Azarov discussed on business visits to both countries in the future and exchange of scholarship programmes which would further enhance relations
