The Sri Lankan President’s adviser on Muslim affairs Al Haj Niyas Moulawi died this morning in Badulla. According to his website, “Niyas Moulavi is honorary member of the All Ceylon Jamiyathul Ulama, while being the president of the Sri Lanka Muslim Peace Council and he heads the Majlisul Ulama, a union that looks after the welfare of the Alims in this country. In the meantime, he is an all island Justice of the Peace as well as a religious advisor for many societies including the mosques in the up country.”
He was also a frequent guest on TV and radio programs as well as a teacher and lecturer. He also led pilgrams to Mecca for the Haj from 1978-2006.
