Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka has said that the Electricity Board will be transformed to be a profitable institution. The Minister expressed this view in the Budget debate.
The Committee Stage discussions of the budget commenced this morning. The expenditure of several institutions that come under seven Ministries is being discussed. It includes the Ministries that come under the President and the Prime Minster as well.
Opening the debate on behalf of the Government Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne said that assistance of the ruling party as well as the opposition is required to implement the Commissions. He said Sri Lanka has a proper judicial system and the outdated laws should be amended to suit the present era.
Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka said a programme is underway to minimize operational losses and ease debt burden of the Electricity Board. He said the projects such as Samanala Wewa launched during the UNP regime had been unsuccessful. The UNP regime did not have a proper plan for the generation of electricity. Minister Dew Gunasekera opined that the report of the Commission appointed to look into the prisons will present its report in two days. He said that action will be taken based on the recommendations of the report.
