The Colombo Crimes Division, the Criminal Investigations Department, the Police Anti Narcotics Bureau and Police Special Investigation Unit are jointly conducting a full investigation into the Mattakuliya incident.
Police Headquarters said that a group of people stormed into the Police Station on Saturday night and the police strengthened the security in the area with the support of the Army. More than 200 people have been questioned in connection with the incident. 25 suspects have been taken into custody. Police Headquarters said that legal action would be instituted against the suspects.
A tense situation arose in the Mattakuliya area on Saturday after a group of people broke into the Police Station and damaged vehicles. They alleged that a suspect connected with drug trafficking disappeared when the police took him into custody. Several houses in the area were also damaged in the incident. The Army and Officers of nearby Police Stations were deployed to bring the situation under control.
Meanwhile Inspector General of Police Mahinda Balasuriya has transferred the Mattakuliya OIC and other Police Officers pending an inquiry over the tense situation which prevailed in Mattakuliya since Saturday. A statement from the Police Headquarters said the Colombo North SSP and the SP have been transferred. The Police Chief said disciplinary action will be taken against the officers if it is proved that they acted against the law.
