Minister Keheliya Rambukwella has pointed out that the IMF had given the credit without being subject to any condition. Addressing a media briefing today, the Minister said securing loans is necessary for the development of the country.
The Minister said the President stood firm on many issues and said the Government should have financial support from outside. The Government had not denied the fact that it was taking money, but it was done certainly on Government terms. To prove that, the Minister said that during the last five years of the President’s tenure, not a single privatization took place nor any employee retrenched.
He pointed out that the very same Opposition in which he was a member, when they were in office, both Budgets in 2002 were completely censored by the IMF and the World Bank. He said he possessed ample evidence to prove it.
