PM calls on the opposition not to belittle the country

Jul 5, 2010 12:20:14 PM - itnnews.lk

Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne has called on the Opposition to refrain from belittling the country in the face of the International community. He made this appeal moving the resolution to extend the State of Emergency by a further month in Parliament today.

The Prime Minister said everyone should unite and display to the world that they are united and are not against each other. He said all members should sink differences and be united. As such, the Prime Minister invited all members in the Opposition, including the Leader of the Opposition to consider the future of the motherland and stay united.

In the meantime joining in the debate in the House today, Minister Rajitha Senaratne said that the North and the East were being directed to a new development era. The Minister said the Government was spending a colossal sum of money on rehabilitation than the expenditure incurred on the war. He referred to the Eastern resurgence and “Uthuru Wasanthaya” prorammes which have been mooted for development.

In the North itself, the area which was mined was 1474 square kilometers. It covered 640 villages. There were 1.5 million landmines. They purchased de-mining equipment. It was the Treasury that incurred the expenditure to get this machinery down to Sri Lanka. As such, the Government was able to de-mine and resettle civilians. There are only 25,000 displaced persons. The Minister told the House that they too would be resettled this year.
