Deputy Minister Dr. Sarath Amunugama has said that the aim of the Government is to increase the economic growth rate up to 8 percent next year.
The Minister gave this view while participating in the Asia Pacific Chamber of Commerce and Industry Conference in Colombo. The conference coincides with the 2010 Economic summit.
The Minister said that the country is engaged in a second war. It is waged against poverty. This country is to be made a model in a new system. During the most difficult days of oil and financial crises the country succeeded in maintaining a GDP growth of 3% to 3.5%. This year the GDP growth has been between 6% -7%. Next year it will be increased to 8%. During the mid term of the President, it will hopefully reach double digits. A major part of the country that was ravaged by the war has been added to the national economy.
It is for the first time that an Asia Pacific Chamber of Commerce and Industry Conference is being held in Sri Lanka. It will come to end tomorrow.
