A South Carolina educator has won a national award for excellence in teaching the French language and culture.
The American Association of Teachers of French awarded Polly Adkins of York with a Dorothy Ludwig Award on Tuesday.
Other winners were a Delaware middle school teacher and a Northwestern University professor. The award recognizes teachers who have made a significant impact on students, the school and community.
Adkins is the only French teacher at York Comprehensive High in York. She has been teaching the language for 41 years.
Adkins says she was among the first language teachers in South Carolina to have her students correspond with French students over the Internet. She also launched her school's drama program.
