President Rajapaksa is on a one-day official visit to the Maldives.
The President left the island this morning on an invitation extended by his Maldivian counterpart Mohamed Nasheed. On arrival at the Male International Airport, the President was warmly greeted by the Deputy President Mohamed Washeed. The official Government website pointed out that the President met former Maldivian President Abdul Gayoom and had discussions.
A political crisis has surfaced in the Maldives. The Maldivian Government said it is their desire to seek the President’s mediation in their disputes, as he had succeeded in totally eliminating terrorism setting an example to the region. Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris has also joined the President in this visit.
