A Newberry woman is charged by Newberry County deputies with robbing a store at knife point as her young daughter waited outside the store.
Ethel Mae Nelson, 45, of Wilson Road, is charged with armed robbery, possession of a weapon during a violent crime and unlawful conduct to a child. She has been hospitalized after injuring herself in a foot chase prior to her arrest.
Around 2 a.m. this morning, a woman with a 7-year-old girl went into the Roberts CITGO on Wilson Road and picked up several items. As the woman went to the register, the girl walked outside and waited in front, the Newberry County Sheriff's Office said.
The store clerk told investigators the woman placed the items on the counter, pulled a knife and demanded money from the register. She took cash and her items and left the store. The clerk said she handed the robber less than $300.
Once during the incident, the child walked back into the store to use the restroom but the woman told her to go back outside, the sheriff's office said.
The suspect was found after a deputy responding to the incident saw a taxi drive by occupied by a woman and small child matching the girl's description.
