Residents in a three-block area on Hagood Avenue were told this morning to stay in their homes after city workers cut into a gas line.
Columbia Fire Chief Aubrey Jenkins said there was no danger but wanted residents to take the precaution of sheltering in place.
Gas was rising from the scene but dissipating quickly after city workers sliced through a 2-inch gas line, Jenkins said.
Firefighters went door to door on Hagood, in the Melrose Heights neighborhood near Gervais Street, to pass along the warning.
