A fire at a Popeye?s restaurant on Garners Ferry Boulevard around 8 this morning did about $50,000 in damage to the restaurant, fire officials said.
No one was inside at the time, according to Columbia Fire Chief Aubrey Jenkins. A passerby saw smoke coming from the back of the building and called the fire department.
The fire started in a trash can inside the restaurant, Jenkins said.
Popeye?s is closed and probably will have to remain closed for several days, Jenkins said.
Firefighters are unsure how the fire started. The incident is under investigation, Jenkins said.
