Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris has said the President’s mediation in defusing the political crisis in Maldives has brought honour to Sri Lanka. He expressed these views in Parliament this morning.
The Minister said the President was able to hold discussions with the conflicting parties and help reach a consensus. The Cabinet was appointed 90 minutes after the discussion. Participating in the Committee Stage discussions, the Minister said that while protecting the rights of the people to protest, the Government is also abiding by the international laws. Referring to the incident that took place at the UN office, the Minster said the Government cannot prevent protests but it took measures for the security of the employees and the UN office. None of the officials were forcibly held. He said that when an economic resurgence was taking place in the country, the statements made by Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremasingh was harmful to the country.
