The fast staged near the UN Office in Colombo has been converted into a fast unto death campaign.
The Jathika Nidahas Peramuna launched a fast demanding the abolition of the Panel on Sri Lanka appointed by the UN Secretary General. Leader of the Party and Minister Wimal Weerawansa joined in the campaign converting it into a fast unto death protest. Religious observances were also held.
Minister Weerawansa called on the nation to come forward to save the valiant soldiers who made an outstanding contribution to liberate the country from terrorism. At the same time he also invited nation to unit in defeating conspirators who made false accusations that the soldiers killed tigers who came forward with white flags to surrender. The Minister appealed to the people to stage protests on streets against the international conspirators.
Meanwhile, the Government yesterday announced that it had to respect the entitlement to voice opinion, including through peaceful demonstrations. Accordingly, the Government statement emphasized that the Police permitted a peaceful gathering in front of the UN complex while ensuring that no obstructions are caused to activities of the UN Office.
