UNP Parliamentarian Sajith Premadasa has said that the UN Chief was unduly interfering in Sri Lanka’s affairs. Joining in Committee discussions of the Budget in Parliament today, he said the Secretary General was acting illegally and arbitrarily.
Mr. Premadasa explicitly stated that the UN Chief’s initiatives were high handed. It is an arbitrary decision. The UN Secretary General only had the powers of implementing unanimous decisions taken by the UN Security Council.. As such Mr. Premadasa emphatically stated that the UN Chief has belittled the entire UN membership by taking a sole decision.
Meanwhile, Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremasinghe’s stand on the protest staged near the Colombo UN Office and the initiatives taken by the UN Secretary General was totally different.
The Opposition Leader told the House that Sri Lankans will encounter difficulties in obtaining visas. They had different views on the UN decision. They also possessed views. Various UN Organisations were supporting Sri Lanka. Mr. Wickremasinghe queried whether they were to lose this assistance.
Deputy Minister Rohitha Abeygunawardena opined that the External Affairs Ministry along with Minister Prof. G.L.Peiris and his Deputy Geethanjana Gunawardena was playing a responsible role in collaboration with the President. He said he wished to mention to the group including Ranil Wickremasinghe and the handful of JVP members who exerted pressure when the war was on and who challenged and raised obstructions that the Government was capable of sorting out this issue with the support of other countries.
