President Rajapaksa has said that patriotic citizens can be moulded by imparting proper education without mechanizing the children.
The President said that in the past children could not travel to Colombo. They could not go shopping with their parents. They could not play at the Galle Face Green. No one visited picturesque beaches in the East or the temples in the North. School children in the East were abducted on their way to school and recruited as child soldiers. Today the Galle Face is congested with children. 300,000 visited Nagadeepa during the Vesak festival. The President pointed out that this freedom cannot be sacrificed due to foreign pressure. The Government is ready to accept the responsibility for the allegations directed against the war heroes. He opined that good qualities should be inculcated in the children to make the country more beautiful.
The President expressed these views at a ceremony at Temple Trees. It was organized in connection with the handing over of the book titled ‘Food for the developing mind” to the President. It was authored by Director of the National Children’s Education Foundation the Ven. Bandagiriye Somawansa thera and Dr. Upali Wickramasekara.
The President said that pre-schools will be strengthened in the future. Many dignitaries including members of the Maha Sangha, Ministers and Parliamentarians were present on the occasion.
