The Government has stressed that the United Nations Office in Colombo has not been closed. It noted that rumours are being spread to this effect.
Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris told Parliament today that Sri Lanka was maintaining relations with the international community. The Minister said the UN Office in Colombo had not been shut down. It was the zonal office that was closed. The Government has informed that maximum security has been provided to the UN office. UN Country representative Neil Buhne has been called to New York for consultations over the issue. The Minister said it is a routine procedure.
Foreign Secretary Romesh Jayasinghe is in contact with the UN Country representative. The Minister further told the House that nothing serious had taken place and the action of the Opposition in this connection is unacceptable.
