Paul, the psychic octopus predicted that Spain will win the world cup beating Holland in the final to be played at Johannesburg this Sunday. He also predicted a German victory against Uruguay in this Saturday’s third place match.
Paul has gained a sizable following in Germany by amassing a perfect 4-0 record in calling Germany’s World Cup clashes. First, he tipped Germany to beat Australia, and then followed it up by correctly predicting Serbia’s upset over Germany. Paul went on to call a German win against Ghana and made waves across the English Channel when he foresaw Germany taking down England.
To follow up, Paul unabashedly predicted the much hyped Argentina’s crushing defeat to Germany in the quarter final.
Spain had never won the world cup let alone ever entered the semi-final prior to beating Germany on Wednesday. The Spanish entered as favorites to win the tournament but a series of unconvincing performances cast doubts on their abilities.
They are back on top however, and the prowess of the likes of the tournament’s co-leading goalscorer David Villa and other Spanish greats like Iniesta have brought them back to being firm favorites to win the Cup.
Paul the Octopus picks out the winner by choosing a mussel from two tanks marked with the contesting teams flags. He has a 100% success rate so far for the world cup but only managed to shore up 70% during 2008′s European Championships where he mistakenly predicted a German victory against the Spanish in the final.
This time though, the Spaniards will be hoping he gets it right.
