Iran plans to launch a new housing scheme in Batticaloa for the benefit of civilians who had been rendered homeless in the war.
The Peace Village which is to built at Kangeyan-odai within the Manmunaipattu Divisional Secretariat Division in Batticaloa will incur an expenditure of 200 million rupees. The Housing Complex will have 125 units. The Housing Scheme is being provided in response to talks the President had with his Iranian counterpart during his recent tour of Iran. The foundation stone for the project was laid by Iran’s Ambassador to Sri Lanka Mahmoud Rahimi Gorji. He said Iran will continuously extend support for development in Sri Lanka.
The Iranian diplomat pointed out that the friendship between Iranian President Moohamed Ahamedenijad and his Sri Lankan counter was very firm. As such Iran was extending assistance for many development projects in Sri Lanka. This housing project is also included in the programme. In addition, he said Iran was planning to extend assistance to supply electricity to 1000 remote villages and the Maha Oya Irrigation Scheme in the future. The Iranian diplomat underscored that they would not hesitate to grant development assistance to the island.
