The budget for 2010 presented by the Government was passed in parliament with a majority of 68 votes today.
The voting on the Second Reading of the budget presented by the Government for the last half of this year took place last Saturday. It was approved with a majority of 63 votes. There after the Third Reading of the Budget which is also known as the Committee Stage discussions commenced on Monday. After a debate which last five days, the voting on the Third Reading took place at 6.00 p.m. today. During this voting 139 votes were cast in favor of the Budget. while 71 voted against. UNP MP Abdul Carder voted with the government. Accordingly the Budget was passed with a majority of 68 votes, five more votes than the majority secured during the voting on the Second Reading.
