12 Sri Lankan trawlers and 20 fishermen who were in the custody of Indian authorities have been released.
The trawlers had been seized by Indian authorities during the period from December last year up to last month. The Government got down a group of fishermen who were in Indian custody earlier. Based on the orders of the Indian External Affairs Ministry, the freed fishermen are expected in the island within the next few days. The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources revealed that the trawlers are from areas such as Gandara, Devinuwara, Kudawella, Negombo and Chilaw. Minister Rajitha Senaratne said he would be visiting India next month to sort out the fisheries issue. He assured to get the release of other Sri Lankan fishermen and trawlers in Indian custody.
