During the era in which the friendly ties between the North and the South were strong, it was the Yal Devi train which brought the rich harvest of the North to the South while products of the South were transported to the Jaffna Peninsula. However, the operation of the Yal Devi train had to be suspended following sporadic gunfire and bomb attacks due to terrorism. For the last several years, the train operated from Colombo Fort only up to Vavuniya. But with the reawakening of the North with peace, the Yal Devi is getting ready to resume operations to the Northern end via Kilinochchi and Elephant Pass. It is for this purpose that the reconstruction of the Northern rail track has been speeded up. The laying of sleepers from Vavuniya to Thaandikulam has been completed. The Government’s desire is to operate trains up to Omanthai from the first of next month. It is with this intention that the rebuilding of the Omanthai Railway station commenced today.
The Northern rail track is being rebuilt with the support of local as well as foreign assistance and in collaboration with the entire nation. It is now gearing itself to become a massive strength for the future of the reawakening Sri Lanka.
