Despite the country’s prisons overflowing with soft crime offenders it has  not deterred  authorities from arresting and continuing to jail people who could possible be let off with a fine and a reprimand.
The latest are a duo from Moratuwa.  Chatura Kumara Chandrasena ,an engineer by profession and his wife, Ruwinee D. Nakandala from Angulana, Moratuw.
According to the Angulana police, the first suspect was charged for using a mobile phone while driving and the second suspect- his wife also arrested and charged for photographing the traffic police officer, who she had claimed was excessively rude and abusive, when he had stopped them.
The couple were jailed despite being parents whose children were left to be looked after by relatives. Ms. Ruwinee was released after being imrpisoned for two days while her husband Chatura Kumara Chandresena was released after 14 days in jai
