Today is World Population Day. The theme is “Encouraging people to participate in their Cencus”
The event was established by the United Nations Development Programme in 1969. It seeks increased public awareness of population issues such as the importance of family planning, gender equality, poverty and maternal health. The World population is estimated to be around 6.8 billion by end of June 2010 as against 5 billion in July 1987. At the current rate of growth in population, analysts forecast that the number of people in the world is likely to reach 7 billion by October 2012.
The United Nations claim that of the 6.8 billion population,5.6 Billion are from low income countries. It is estimated that about 225 thousand adds up annually to Sri Lanka’s population. The national programme to mark World Population Day will be held at the SLFI this afternoon.
