The Health Ministry has warned of six-month prison terms for anyone caught maintaining dengue breeding grounds. This civil issue has been referred to the powerful Defence Ministry for support following 2893 reported cases and 33 deaths in Colombo alone. Jaffna and Gampaha have also reported 16 and 18 deaths, respectively. Dengue is a mosquito borne disease which causes high fever, rash and bodily pain.
This issue has become especially pressing since the recent death of a young (31) female doctor in Badulla. Dengue is spread by mosquitos which can breed in stagnant water like those of open flower pots, containers, etc. With Ministry Of Defence help, these acts will now bear more attention and punishment. The Presidential Task Force meeting on the Mosquito Breeding Control Act included Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena, Defence Secretary Gothabaya Rajapaksa, Chiefs of the Armed Forces, the IGP and the head of the Civil Defence Force.
