The Annual Kataragama Festival will commence today. Basnayake Nilame Shashendra Rajapaksa said that the perahera will be held until 26th of this month, starting from today.
The perahera will be held as usual on the 13th, 14th, 15th and 16th. The Basnayake Nilame of the Kataragama Devala will take part in the procession on the 17th. On the 18th, 19th 20th and 21st too the perahera will be held as usual.
Moneragala District Additional Secretary S.A.L. Rangana said that “Fire walking” will take place on the 22nd night and the perahera will be held as usual on the 24th. The festival will be concluded with the “Water Cutting” ceremony on the 26th.
The Government has provided sanitary and other necessary facilities for the pilgrims who are participating in the festival. Security authorities have also taken measures to strengthen security in the area.
