One-hundred-twelve people have voted absentee so far in the race for the District 2 Columbia City Council representative — a sign of what is expected to be a low turnout for tomorrow’s election.
In the April 20 runoff for Columbia mayor, when the city had one if its highest turnouts for a local election in recent memory, 1,552 people voted absentee across the city’s four council districts. That breaks down to 388 people per district.
The Richland County Voter Registration Office issued 119 absentee ballots. They must be received by 7 p.m. tomorrow to be counted.
A low voter turnout could be blamed on two things: voter fatigue and less money spent on turning out the vote, said Bob Wislinski, a political consultant who has worked on several Columbia City Council races.
