Farmers market delays could affect business

When vendors are supposed to leave the State Farmers Market on Bluff Road next month, some will have to shut down or scale back operations for a few months because they don’t have space in the new Lexington County location.
New space for several smaller wholesalers and half of the mid-level retailers is not expected to be available until October — at the earliest — because the market’s private developer hasn’t started work yet. Meanwhile, most large wholesalers’ private buildings should be ready.
So two meetings will be held in upcoming days — one called by the vendors and one by the agriculture department — to try to sort out the situation.
Some market operations will remain in Richland County, some will be in Lexington County, and some will be “in limbo,” assistant agriculture commissioner Larry Boyleston said.
