SC town considers ban on illegal immigrants

One South Carolina town is considering a ban that would prevent illegal immigrants from living in the town and, in most cases, working there.
The proposal is being discussed on Wednesday at a meeting of the Summerville Town Council.
Councilman Walter Bailey says the ordinance is needed because the federal government is not doing enough to prevent illegal immigration.
The proposed ordinance requires those who rent apartments or homes in the town to provide proof they are American citizens or in the country legally.
Companies would have to verify the immigration status of workers. The ordinance would not apply to independent contractors or domestic workers.
