Naval investigators and deputies in Montana have arrested a man in connection with the beating death of a sailor stationed in South Carolina nearly 18 years ago.
KTVQ in Missoula, Montana, reported Tuesday that 38-year-old Charles Welty came into the Missoula County sheriff's office last week and confessed to his role in the death of 22-year-old James Horton in 1992.
Horton was a sailor stationed at a former Navy base in Charleston when he was killed.
Welty is being held without bail. It wasn't immediately clear whether he had an attorney.
An officer at the sheriff's department referred calls to the Naval Criminal Investigation Service. A message left with NCIS was not immediately returned Tuesday evening.
