South Carolina Electric & Gas Co. will clean up what state officials say is coal tar in the Congaree River created by the operation of century-old power plants downtown.
“It’s simply the right thing to do,” Kevin Marsh, president of the Cayce-based utility, said today.
The coal gasification plants operated from the 1880s to the 1950s, officials said.
SCE&G agreed to the project after state environmental officials investigated the source of a black substance recently discovered near Gist and Senate Streets.
