The JVP affiliated All Ceylon General Port Employees Union (ACGPEU) led Ape Kandayama (Our Team) has secured 70 out of the 86 slots in the election held to elect board members to the Port Employees Bank.
ACGPEU Secretary Chandrasiri Mahagamage told The Sunday Leader that the Team led by the JVP union and supported by many other trade unions in the Sri Lanka Ports including the UNP’s Jathika Sevaka Sangamaya (JSS) won a majority slots in the Bank at the election held on July 7.
The Port Employees Bank has a membership of over 10,000 members and is worth Rs. 600 million, he said.
He explained that the main groups that contested the election were Ape Kandayama and the Nidahas Kandayama led by the SLFP trade union at the Ports.
Employees from the Colombo, Galle, Trincomalee and Oluvil ports voted to elect members to the Bank.
“The election was held like a general election with a pre-election campaign backed by the two deputy ministers in-charge of Ports. Our team candidates were threatened and we had to face many obstacles,” he said.
Mahagamage said that Ape Kandayama had managed to secure 90% of the votes cast by members representing all political factions in the Ports.
“It is a collective decision of the employees in the Ports to defeat the current administration,” he said.
