Columbia council discusses unification proposal

The Columbia Police Department would continue to exist under the management of Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott, who would run both agencies in a show of cooperation unprecedented in the state’s history, according to a proposal before City Council that was discussed in depth publicly for the first time Wednesday night.
But for the contract to work, Columbia officials would have to overcome some significant legal issues that if left unaddressed could hinder the sheriff’s ability to run the police department.
After a public meeting on the issue Wednesday night, one thing was clear: The decision rests with City Council.
“To me it’s very simple: If y’all want it done, it’ll get done,” Lott told council members during a round-table discussion at City Hall.
