UNP MP and former Plantation Industries Minister Lakshman Kiriella said the thought Foreign Minister G L Pieris had failed in his duty by not adequately addressing the delicate situation brought about by the recent UN protest.
“The Government is unable to deal with the pressures of governing the country,” he said.
Kiriella said that in his opinion the protest, spearheaded by NFF MP Wimal Weerawansa, was “ill-timed.” He also accused the Government of making contradictory statements, castigating the West and the UN within Sri Lanka, and begging foreign countries for money when abroad. “The most important thing as far as foreign policy is concerned is to say the same thing within and outside Sri Lanka,” Kiriella said.
He added that some members were only keen for “photo ops” with Western leaders.
“I feel sorry for the country. They are bringing the country into contempt.” Kiriella said.
