Engineering Students Protest Mismanagement Of Funds

Jul 15, 2010 8:13:20 AM - thesundayleader.lk

Students of the Higher National Diploma of Engineering, from the Sri Lanka Institute of Advanced Technological Engineering (SLIATE) staged a protest outside the Ministry of Higher Education in Ward Place today, against an alleged mismanagement of funds by the Director-General of the Sri Lanka Institute of Advanced Technological Engineering.

The students allege that a fund of 21.9 million euros made available to students of the Higher National Diploma of Engineering by Austria and the Netherlands, was being unfairly allocated to the setting up of an entirely new degree programme for engineering in Labaduwa, instead of being put back into the existing degree programme at the SLIATE in Mattakuliya, that is suffering.

Student Union Organizer Mangala Serasinghe told the Leader that they wanted the mismanagement and waste of useful funds ‘stopped immediately’, and said that they were appealing to the Minster of Higher Education and other relevant authorities to intervene and make sure that the money went to where it was most useful.
