Two young children are in protective custody after neighbors told authorities they had been wandering for hours unsupervised in a Cayce neighborhood.
Cayce Department of Public Safety officers jailed Rebecca Lynn Coleman, 41, of Helen Street in Cayce, and Jeffrey Edward Nance, 47, of North, charging both with child neglect.
Around 7:40 p.m. Wednesday, officers were called to the 1800 block of Helen Street by a neighbor who said two children, ages 3 and 4, were wandering outside. The caller said they children had been wandering around for at least 7 hours. The responding officers found the children in an "extremely dirty" state and wearing urine-soaked clothing.
The police department described Coleman and Nance as the children's guardians. Police said the pair were asleep and difficult to wake. One of them told officers they had taken prescription drugs.
The children are in the care of the Department of Social Services.
