Twenty-five suspected illegal immigrants were detained at Shaw Air Force Base Wednesday as they tried to get on base to work on a construction project.
The workers were employed by Palacio Drywall, a sub-contractor from Cornelius, N.C., according to a release from Shaw's public affairs office.
The workers were denied entrance after they showed improper identification at the base's main gate. They were refused entry, and airmen from the 20th Security Forces Squadron called local law enforcement.
The Sumter Police Department called the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency, which detained the 25 people, according to Shaw's release.
The Air Force said there was no breach of security on base.
