Govt. Will Gradually Release HSZs Lands Says Deputy Minister Muralitharan

Jul 16, 2010 4:36:38 AM - thesundayleader.lk

Deputy Resettlement Minister Vinayagamurthy Muralitharan (formerly known as Karuna) said the government would gradually release the lands occupied by security forces under High Security Zones (HSZs) in the North in order to resettle displaced civilians.

Muralitharan told The Sunday Leader that the HSZs in the North have left 62,000 people displaced.

“The Defence Secretary has promised to me that he would gradually release the lands occupied by HSZs to resettle civilians who have been displaced. We have already resettled some civilians in Vadamarachchi East,” he said.

Muralithran’s comments come after Government Spokesperson Minister Keheliya Rambukwella yesterday stated that the HSZs in the North would remain and that the government was not going to dismantle them.

However, EPDP Leader and Minister Douglas Devananda has also stated that Preisdent Mahinda Rajapaksa had assured him that the HSZs in the North would be dismantled to resettle civilians.
