South Carolina transportation officials say the northbound lanes of Interstate 385 should open at least two weeks early, after being closed for seven months of work.
The Greenville News reported Friday that transportation engineer Nick Waites said the northbound lanes between Clinton and Gray Court could open as early as July 23, but no later than July 28.
Officials closed 15 miles of both lanes of the highway that runs from I-26 to Greenville in January for a $61 million renovation. Officials say closing both lanes at the same time saved $35 million and more than a year on the construction.
Motorists have had to take a detour on country roads or take I-26 to Spartanburg and then I-85 to Greenville.
The project raised bridges and replaced 15 miles of asphalt with 10-inch concrete.
