Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena has pointed out that the Government has taken several critical decisions for the improvement of the Tourism industry. The Minister made this reference during a meeting to discuss the problems of the Hikkaduwa Tourism Zone.
The Minister recalled that the Government had been given 144 seats. This is the highest number of seats secured under the present system. The Government was given this power to resuscitate the economy if the country had been liberated totally from terrorism. As such, within this six years the economy of every person will be strengthened. When compared with the future in May last year, the number of tourists arrivals in May this year increased by 76 thousand. He pointed out that their target by 2016 was to attract 2.5 million tourists. The groundwork had to be laid and arrangements made to achieve this goal. The Minister noted that within a week they will be amending the Parliamentary Act.
Many proposals were made to consolidate the safety of the tourists by dismantling illegal constructions on the coastal belt. Consensus was reached to take urgent measures to prevent the devastation of coral reef.
