Garbage collected daily from the Colombo City was dumped in the Bloemendhal, Madampitiya and Kolonnawa areas. With the daily collection of thousands of tons, the stench emanating from the garbage became a serious problem to the residents in the vicinity of these areas. They encountered various problems. Whilst schools were shut down, businesses too were unable to operate. It was that this problem which led to the complete suspension of garbage being dumped at Bleomendhal and Madampitiya areas.
An immediate programme has been unveiled on the instructions of Defence Secretary Gothabaya Rajapaksa to bury the garbage that had been dumped in Kolonnawa as a solution to the stench which was unbearable for the residents. Mr. Rajapaksa visited the location in Kolonnawa this morning to monitor the progress of this effort. The garbage was being buried with the help of Backhoe machines of the Army. The Defence Secretary instructed the Municipal Council authorities that the garbage which will be dumped hereafter should be buried in this manner.
The Defence Secretary came in for appreciation by the residents who experienced many hardships for several years. The people of the area as well as people’s representatives say they are now breathing a sigh of relief due to the solutions found to their problem with the mediation of the Defence Secretary.
